Between its opponent’s speed and depth the Joel Barlow High boys swim team was in for a tough time when it hosted Oxford.
The Falcons captured only three first places in the meet on Dec. 27. While they did get several top five finishers in most of the events they could not make up the difference in a 99.78 loss.
Besides the win, the Wolverines had two of the top three finishes in the opening meet, the 200-yard medley relay. Second went to Brendan Coppinger, Aaron Hurwitz, Ed Hancock and Nathan Varga in two minutes, 5.81 seconds.
Dan Fry le Barlow in the 200 free in 2:02.57, good for third. Marissa DiBella was fifth in 2:26.10.
The Falcons also took third in the 200 individual medley with Renee Varga finishing in 2:36.84. Due to a disqualification, she was their only scorer in the event.
It was close int he 50 free as Hancock was second in 24.97, less than half a second off the lead. Nate Varga was fourth in 28.17 and Sean Murray was one spot later in 29.72.
The diving event was the bst for Barlow, which took three of the top four places. Gloria Davey led the way with a score of 167.60 and Matt Mintz was a close second with 165.50. Kevin O’Donnell took third with 152.55.A win also came in the 100 butterfly as Hancock swam a 1:06.27.
Barlow’s points in the 100 free came from Fry in second (54.85) and Ray Bortolot in third (55.05). The Wolverines also took the top two spots in the 500 free. Going the distance for Barlow, Renee Varga was third in 6:07.46. Kyle Guffeey followed in 6:38.89 and Marissa DiBella was fifth in 6:39.53.
Bortolot, Nate Varga, Renee Varga and Fry combined to swim a 1:48.19 in the 300 free relay, taking second in the process. Barlow also took second in the 100 backstroke as Coppinger finished in 1:12.61. Murray was fourth in 1:23.73 and Mike Caruso was fifth in 1:28.66.
A one-two finish for the Wolverines in the 100 breaststroke gave them a commanding lead with one event to go. Hurwitz was second here in 1:25.09 and Nathan Varga was right behind him in 1:33.32.
With victory assured, Oxford swam the 400 free relay unofficially and received no points. The Falcons would take the top two places with Hancock, Fry, Renee Varga and Bortolot swimming a 3:56.67 and DiBella, Coppinger, Guffey and Murray finishing in 4:38.13.
Barlow, now 1-3 overall, resumes its schedule on Jan. 22 when it visits New Fairfield at 4 p.m.
