Despite warmer than usual weather, course conditions held up for the Joel Barlow High girls ski team in its race last week.

It also rained the night before the race at Mount Southington on Thursday, Jan. 31. The Falcons formally raced only one opponent and totaled a team time of 278.46 second to beat Greenwich (299.62) but they were the fastest of five teams on the mountain.

It was the Falcons’ first race in three weeks but they got right back into form with five skiers in the top 10 places. For the second straight race they had the second-fastest individual time overall. Avery Melville’s 45.21 was second only to Fairfield’s Sarah Mason.

Fifth went to Anna Melville in 45.33, just 0.02 second after Fairfield’s Kelsey Tague. Right behind her teammate was Ali Kudaj with a 45.49.

With a 46.73, Martina Maroun was eighth overall. Also in the top 10 was Heather Ward, finishing 10th in 47.71.

Barlow had one more skier breaking the 50-second mark. Completing the scoring for the team, Lindsay Doyle was 13th in 47.99.

Also in the varsity race, Joanna Harrold was 30th in 50.36. It was too close to call for 32nd. Both Micaela Haas and Greenwich’s Meg Robinson finished tied with a 50.70.

Next was Sarah McCain, taking 36th in 50.94. Olivia Pelzar was 43rd in 53.64, 0.02 second behind Weston’s Greta Guthrie.

The Barlow boys faced a larger field that day. A total time of 286.44 was good for wins over St. Luke’s (321.77) and Litchfield (301.41) but put them behind New Canaan (272.14), Fairfield Prep (272.24) and Greenwich (282.07).

Barlow had one skier in the top 25. Luke Maroun had his team’s fastest combined time with a 45.40, putting him 23rd.

Next came Raja Basak-Smith, who was 36th in 46.80. Andreas Panos was 44th in 47.72.

A 48.13 got Miguel Holmes 48th. Two places later was Mark Boffa in 48.53.

Completing the scoring for Barlow David Wastrom placed 55th in 49.86.  Also in the varsity race, Sam Ulfsson in 51.40 for 66th.

Pat Devine finished 74th in 52.51 and Brian Jacobs had a 54.70 for 83rd. Reid Wilson was 86th in 55.70.
