Aspetuck Wildcats Association (AWA) youth football has announced that it is leaving American Youth Football and Cheer (AYF) to compete in the Fairfield County Football League (FCFL). AWA’s cheer program will remain in AYF to compete in a separate AYF cheer division.

“We decided to make the change because the FCFL structure, schedule and rules are a better fit for our program,” said AWA President John Shaban.

AWA football had been competing in AYF since 2004, and won the seventh grade open division national championship in 2007.

“Over the last few years, however, our football numbers have declined due in large part to Weston leaving AWA to start their own single town program, leaving only Easton and Redding,” said Shaban. “At the same time our current league has evolved into a big city format, requiring travel all over the state. FCFL will offer superior instruction and competition, along with some different game rules and player size restrictions that will make the game safer and more fun.”

FCFL includes Ridgefield, Westport, Darien, Fairfield, New Canaan, Weston and Wilton. Practice will begin August 15.

“We can’t wait,” said Shaban. “This will be fun for our kids and our parents.”
