Boys basketball: Bad start dooms Weston in loss to Stratford

The Stratford High boys basketball team won a 67-48 SWC home decision from Weston High on Tuesday. Stratford (6-3) jumped out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter and was up 35-15 at halftime. Jack Ryan (18 points) led four Red Devils who scored in double figures for coach Tim Swaller. Sean Carroll scored 14 points, Joe August 12 and John Bike had 10, as Stratford improved to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the SWC. The Weston High wrestling team went 3-1 on Saturday at the Kearney Duals at Staples High School. Weston defeated Fairfield Prep, 54-24, New Haven, 54-30, and Staples, 43-42. The Trojans edged Staples based on the criteria of having the most wrestlers to score first. Going 4-0 on the day were Jack Tunney at 106 pounds (two pins and two forfeits), Breon Phifer at 132 (two pins, two forfeits) and Alec McGlone at 172 (three pins, forfeit). The Joel  Barlow wrestling teams split four matches on Saturday at the Art Powers Duels in Berlin. The Falcons had wins over East Hartford, 38-36, and RHAM, 54-24, but lost to Bristol Central, 51-22, and Berlin, 48-33. Three Barlow wrestlers — Josh Brault, Carson LiCastri and Ben Coppock — were 4-0 on the day, while Walter Alverez, Alex Klein Wassink and Ben Bai each had three wins. The Weston boys basketball team rallied from a 27-14 halftime deficit to score a 43-39 win at New Fairfield on Monday afternoon. The Trojans (5-4) outscored the Rebels 14-3 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 30-28, and won the fourth quarter 15-9 for the four-point win. Christian Watanabe led the victors with 17 points (including three 3-pointers), seven rebounds and five assists. Powell leads Barlow hockey to first win

Andrew Powell scored three goals and added an assist as the Joel Barlow boys hockey team defeated Shepaug, 6-3, for its first victory of the season Saturday at the Danbury Ice Arena. The Falcons are now 1-8 this season. Shepaug, meanwhile, dropped to 0-9 and has now lost 49 straight games. Powell got Barlow started with a goal in the opening minute. By a combined total of four points, the Joel Barlow boys and girls basketball teams split their games against New Fairfield on Friday night. In New Fairfield, the Barlow boys held on to beat the Rebels, 54-52. Barlow opened a 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and was ahead 24-17 at halftime and 41-36 through three quarters. Joel Barlow High’s wrestling team earned a 42-24 win at Stratford in a South-West Conference clash on Wednesday. The Falcons got four wins via pins and the rest by forfeit, improving to 3-1 in dual-meet competition this winter. In the 106-pound weight division, Barlow freshman Josh Brault pinned his sophomore counterpart, Sean Meisel in 1:20. At 113, sophomore Christian Hiden pinned senior Dakota Benson in 33 seconds. An epic comeback by the Weston High girls basketball team fell painfully short as the Trojans lost at Notre Dame-Fairfield, 45-44, on Friday night. The Lancers led 41-27 after three quarters. The Trojans held the Lancers scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the fourth quarter and had the ball and a chance to win the game on two possessions but couldn’t quite pull it off. The Weston and Joel Barlow skiing teams competed against 12 other teams in the second race of the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League season on Wednesday at Mt. Southington. Girls race The Barlow girls team remained undefeated, improving its record to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the small school division. A basketball game Friday night at Joel Barlow High School will include a softball component. Members of Barlow’s 2017 Class L state champion softball team will receive their championship rings during a halftime ceremony at the varsity girls basketball game between Barlow and New Fairfield in Redding. The game starts at 7 p.m. The Falcons earned the first state softball title in school history last fall by beating Torrington, 4-2, in the Class L finals.
