Special Town Meeting on BMS funding set for Jan. 21

The Board of Selectmen held a Special Meeting this morning at 8:30 at Town Hall and set the date of Monday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. at Samuel Staples Elementary School, for a Special Town Meeting.

The purpose of the Special Town Meeting is for taxpayers to take action on a special appropriation of $404,346 to fund repairs to the building management system and improve the lighting at Samuel Staples Elementary School. Taxpayers will also act on a special appropriation of $64,200 to fund the conversion of oil boilers at the Town Hall, Library and 660 Morehouse Road to natural gas.

The Board of Finance recommended both appropriations.

The Town Hall and schools will be closed Jan. 21 for the Martin Luther King holiday, but Althea Falco, administrative assistant for the first selectman’s office, said the selectmen checked into the matter, and it is permissible to hold the Town Meeting on that date.

The Presidential Inauguration will also take place that day.

The question is not WHETHER it is permissable to conduct a Town Meeting on the MKL Jr holiday, but whether it is ADVISABLE. Choosing this date for an evening Town Meeting indicates very poor taste on the part of Easton’s selectmen. Would they dare schedule a similar meeting on Good Friday or Yom Kippur?
