Brittney Dumas, a 2012 graduate of Joel Barlow High, was named the 2013 Empire 8 women’s basketball Rookie of the Year.
Dumas, a freshman forward at Hartwick College (Oneonta, N.Y.) was also named to the All-Empire 8 second team. Junior guard Maria Foglia was named the 2013 Empire 8 women’s basketball Player of the Year and the All-Empire 8 first team, marking the first time in Empire 8 Conference women’s basketball history that the Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year in a given year have been from the same team.
“This is an unbelievable honor to have both Player and Rookie of the Year on our team,” said Hartwick head coach Missy West. “There are so many great players in this conference and to think two of our own received the highest honors is just very humbling and exciting. These two players work above and beyond their call of duty to try and be the best players they can be. The accolades are great but at the end of the day, both of these players just want to win games.”
Dumas appeared in all 25 games to date, making 21 starts. She is averaging 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for the Hawks. She is shooting 53.4 percent from the field, which ranks 22nd in Division III, and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Dumas finished in double digits 19 times during the regular season. She led Hartwick in scoring in nine games and was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Week four times.
“Brittney is our most athletic player and she’s tough to defend with her ability to post, drive, and step out and hit big shots,” said West. “She has had some big games for us on the offensive end and has been able to score at a high percentage from the floor. Brittney still has a lot of growth and maturity ahead of her in all aspects of her game and she has not even come close to her potential. We are excited to see what the next three years bring for her.”
